Godfather of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Geoffrey Hinton raises concerns about AI’s future and potential threats to humanity

Posted: Monday, May 1, 2023. 5:27 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Geoffrey Hinton, a prominent figure in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), has voiced his concerns about the technology he helped create. NBC reports that Hinton recently left his job at Google to speak publicly about his worries about AI’s rapid advancement and where it is headed. He joins a growing list of experts who are speaking out about the unbridled development and release of AI. Hinton is particularly worried that future versions of the technology could pose a real threat to humanity, saying, “It is hard to see how you can prevent the bad actors from using it for bad things,” according to NBC.

Hinton is most noted for his development of deep learning, which uses neural networks to pull patterns from massive sets of data. Like other experts, he believes that the race between Big Tech to develop more powerful AI will escalate into a global race. Hinton tweeted on Monday morning that he felt Google had acted responsibly in its development of AI, but that he had to leave the company to speak out.

Hinton, along with scientists Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCun, won the Turing Award in 2019, known as the tech industry’s version of the Nobel Prize, for their advancements in AI. They were open about their concerns with AI but optimistic about the technology’s potential, including detecting health risks earlier than doctors and providing more accurate weather warnings about earthquakes and floods. However, the group also acknowledged the risks around AI and the need for collaboration to mitigate some of those concerns.

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, which includes 19 current and former leaders of academic society, recently released an open letter warning the public of the risks around AI, including the potential for AI systems to make errors, to provide biased recommendations, to threaten privacy, to empower bad actors with new tools, and to have an impact on jobs.
