By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize (PLB) on Sunday of the weekend its semifinals were to be played confirmed that the semifinals of the 2022-2023 Closing Championship are on hold until the PLB Disciplinary Committee arrives at a new decision regarding the San Pedro Pirates-Verdes match which wasn’t played on Saturday, April 8 in San Pedro.

After an appeal, the Football Federation of Belize’s (FFB) Appeals Committee overruled the PLB Disciplinary Committee’s decision that ruled the unplanned match a forfeit by the Pirates and gave Verdes the three points.

“The decision of the Appeal Committee regarding the decision made by the PLB Disciplinary Committee has been quashed and is null and void,” the PLB statement posted on social media at 12:23 pm on Sunday said.

That means that the game is not deemed a forfeit by San Pedro as the PLB Disciplinary Committee had ruled, and the three points which had been given to Verdes have been taken back.

The Premier League of Belize said that after the FFB’s Appeals Committee sent their decision to the PLB Disciplinary Committee, the Committee, “having received all the necessary information as it relates to the case for reviewing and following protocol” will have to review the case and make a new ruling.

The PLB said that once the PLB Disciplinary Committee’s new ruling is made that it will make it public.

The San Pedro Pirates-Verdes game wasn’t played on April 8 because the Belize City referees left San Pedro when they found out the Pirates hadn’t made lodging arrangements for them to spend the night.

The PLB Disciplinary Committee is expected to rule that the San Pedro-Verdes game must be replayed or can cancel the game altogether.

As it stands, Verdes are still the number one team in the PLB with 27 points and San Pedro second with 26. Port Layola (25) are third and Progresso (23) fourth. However, the San Pedro-Verdes game is pending and if the game must be played, then the outcome of the game will decide who finishes first. San Pedro must win to finish first since they have one point less. Verdes finish first with a win or a draw.

If San Pedro finish first, they play Progresso while Verdes will play Port Layola. However, if Verdes finish first, they play Progresso, and San Pedro take on Port.

For now, we keep wait.
