International News: Workers in El Salvador march demanding increase to minimum wage

Posted: Tuesday, May 2, 2023. 8:30 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Inflation is a global issue affecting billions across the world including the Americas region.

Today is recognized in El Salvador as International Workers’ Day and workers took to the streets to demand an increase to the minimum wage.

Prensa Latina reports that residents are grappling to deal with the high cost of living in the country.

The minimum wage in El Salvador stands at $365 US per month.

Wilfredo Barrios of the Salvadoran Union Front says that to keep up with the high cost of basic food items, the minimum wage should be raised to atleast $600 US per month.

Barrios also criticized President Nayib Bukele’s administration saying that there is “political persecution for anyone who isn’t in agreement with (the president’s) authoritarian, dictatorial thinking.”

Those attending the protest also reported “blockades” by security forces on people coming from different parts of the country to take part in the march.
