#TaiwancanHelp the World; with participation in World Health Assembly

Posted: Tuesday, May 2, 2023. 2:35 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Taiwan continues to be an important ally for countries including Belize providing support in areas of health, education, agriculture and technology.

As the world enters the 4th year of the global COVID-19 pandemic, we look back on Taiwan’s significant contributions to Belize including donation of essential medical supplies and equipment, including surgical and N95 masks, protective gowns, and ventilators. Taiwan has continued to support the health system in Belize.

It is crucial that Taiwan is allowed to assist, advocate and support better global health in the World Health Assembly to achieve #HealthForAll.

Taiwan International Healthcare Training Center has trained over 2,000 healthcare professionals from 77 countries over the last 20 years.

Taiwan has also provided several medical and technical services to African countries since the 1950s.

In addition, Taiwan continues to help its friends and allies maintain maternal and child health, and reducing the continent’s early neonatal mortality rate by 1 percent.

As countries around the world move toward improved COVID-19 responses and global public health planning, Taiwan’s independent and comprehensive medical and public health system can provide support for countries.

Taiwan continues to proactively seek participation in the World Health Organization (WHO) and World Health Assembly (WHA) by their contribution and support based on their commitment to safeguarding public health and protecting human rights.

Earlier this year, the Government of Belize issued a statement saying that Taiwan’s participation as an observer in the World Health Assembly is imperative.

“The Government of Belize remains committed to the joint efforts led by the WHO and reiterates its support for the inclusion of Taiwan as an observer at the 76th WHA to help the fight against COVID-19, other emerging communicable diseases, and the sharing of genetic sequencing information, which is critical.  Belize urges the WHO to include Taiwan in all health emergency-related meetings and mechanisms, such as the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence and the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS),” the Government of Belize noted.

Taiwan’s Minister of Health and Welfare, Dr. Hsueh Jui-yuan said that Taiwan is willing and able to share its experience in creating a cross-sectoral, innovative, and people-centered health approach to help the international community work toward the realization of the SDGs related to health and well-being.
