Commissioner of Police warns Leader of the Opposition: ‘You should not play politics with the lives of the Belizean people’

By Aaron Humes: It has become almost rote for Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow to call, at every opportunity when questioned about the crime situation, for the removal of Commissioner of Police Chester Williams and Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa, not to mention CEO Kevin Arthurs.

In his most recent interview, Barrow described Williams’ performance as “lethargic” and “disconnected,” and that after a career in which he “has done his best. He has made his impact, made his contribution,” it is time for someone else to take the reins as Williams has “reached [his] capacity. He cited, in particular, the tide of corruption among police officers and the sudden spurts of violence that belie the official figures.

As for Musa, Barrow said he “has not been able to deliver” and that the Prime Minister should intervene and move him on, adding that he would not be the worst person in the world for admitting defeat on an issue that has bedeviled the country in the last four decades.

But the Commissioner isn’t ready to go just yet – and at Tuesday’s weekly press briefing, he had a few words for the younger Barrow.

First, he questioned whether Barrow wants to be Prime Minister to truly get the country to where it should be, or just to say he had the job like father Dean Barrow did and that “he will never be like his father.”

Next, he detailed a conversation with the Leader during the recent state reception for the President of Taiwan’s visit, where he says the younger Barrow claimed credit for getting him appointed, suggested he was the best Commissioner Belize has ever seen, and when the top cop directly questioned why he keeps asking for him to be fired, that Barrow reportedly responded, “but I just ask for them to fire you because that’s politics.”

But the Opposition, Commissioner Williams said, should not play politics with the lives of the Belizean people, so he does not take offense to the public pronouncements.

As for being “disconnected” or out of touch, the Commissioner points to his regular press appearances where he says he takes every question from the “pain in the butt” press corps as a means of accounting to the Belizean people.
