John Burgos to lead Ministry of Blue Economy’s Marine Protected Areas Programme

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation (MBECA) announced that Belizean John Burgos is joining MBECA as Marine Protected Areas Programme Lead!

“Conservation and advocacy are a passion, and he welcomes the opportunity to positively contribute towards a healthy and robust Blue and Green Economy for Belize as Marine Protected Areas Program Lead,” MBECA said.

“He loves Mother Nature and the outdoors as an avid hiker/explorer of land and sea adventures.”

The Blue Economy Ministry said that as Executive Director of the Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA), Burgos gained in-depth knowledge and experience about conservation, advocacy and the importance of building networks with other professionals.

“He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and Administration with various international certifications from courses, and training opportunities in various capacity building areas,” MBECA said.

Burgos owns and manages a tour and consultancy business and as a member of the Rotary Club, he assists Belizeans through various community projects in health, education and environmental sectors.

“He spent ten years in the education sector as a teacher, lecturer and administrator. He transitioned into the private sector for five years and then almost six years in the NGO community,” MBECA said.

The Blue Economy Ministry said Burgos will lead the operationalization of the Ministry’s new National Marine Protected Areas Framework which seeks greater involvement and participation of communities and other stakeholders in a sustainable and enhanced co-management of our marine reserves.
