Orange Walk’s Mayan Garden community destroyed by fire

By Aaron Humes: Between three and four on Sunday afternoon, The Mayan Garden on the outskirts of Orange Walk Town suffered an estimated five million dollars in damages after several structures were consumed by fire. The structures include the gym, the river lodge, the stable and feed house, the pool room, and the aerobics center. Due to the extent of the fire, officials opted to go into prevention mode to protect the other buildings from burning.

National Fire Service supervisor Kenneth Mortis noted in his after-action report to reporters on Tuesday, “What contributed to the quick spread was that all these structures had a roof made of a grass-type structure. All of that combined with the afternoon being a windy day, the flying embers, and the close proximity of all these units, even if we were on the scene before the fire started, there was little salvaging that could have been done by us. The structure alone posed a threat to the owner.”

The proprietor had gone out before the incident occurred and it’s not clear as yet what is the cause of the fire or whether the property is insured. Investigations continue.
