The Belize National Dance Company Prepares to Captivate!

By Giselle O’Brien: On May 6th, the Belize National Dance Company (BNDC) will be celebrating their 33rd Anniversary with a dance concert.  The BNDC has been an established celebration of dance and artistry in Belize and they are coming back with a bang, post-pandemic. 

Established in October, 1990, the Belize National Dance company highlights dance traditions established by Belizean pioneers in the field such as Robert ‘Bob’ Reneau, Leoni Henry, Marjorie Bradley and Sistie Fairweather.  The founders of the BNDC: Althea Sealy, Gregory Vernon, Lita Hunter Krohn, the late Beverly Smith-Lopez and the late Rosita Baltazar, worked diligently for decades to develop and nurture the talents of Belizean dancers and choreographers.  Over the years they have teamed up with notable dance companies including The Cuban Dance Theater (Teatro de la Danza del Caribe) and The Ballet Folklorico Nacional Garifuna de Honduras.  These partnerships have led to memorable performance exchanges, modern dance workshops and training, and choreographic collaborations.

Since its establishment, the BNDC has developed and maintained diverse dance styles which reflect our nation’s many cultures and influences from the Caribbean and Central America.  The Company places value in highlighting and merging Creole, Garifuna, Maya and Mestizo traditional folk dances with Afro-Caribbean, modern and contemporary dance techniques.  This creates an endearing dance form, whose vibrance and energy resonates with a fresh, new flare.  The Belize National Dance Company has been privileged to bring its repertoire to stages across Europe, Asia, North American, Central America and the Caribbean.
