By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Zoo & Tropical Education Center (TBZTEC) reminds Belizeans that it is against the law to set fires without proper authorization, posting several pictures of wildfires.
“Wildfires are rampant throughout Central America currently, and Belize is no exception,” the Belize Zoo said in a social media post.
“We remind the general public that it is against the law to set fires without proper authorization, and uncontrolled fires pose serious risks to life, health, livelihoods, and ecosystems.”

The Belize Zoo said the job of reducing wildfires is tireless.
“We are grateful to our NGO, government, and community partners we have been working with tirelessly for weeks to reduce the very real threats of human-induced fires,” the Belize Zoo said.
On April 30, the Belize Zoo reposted a post from January 23 in which it warned that an increase in number and intensity of fires were expected for this dry season from February to May.
“This time of year brings an increase in number and intensity of fires that, if uncontrolled, can threaten life, health, livelihoods, and ecosystem services.”
The Belize Zoo & Tropical Education Center said it is “part of the Maya Forest Corridor Fire Working Group, a growing coalition of stakeholders from communities, private landowners, and NGOs in Central Belize committed to addressing wildland fire management for the benefit of all.”
