High Court grants bail to Tehje Vaughan, accused in shooting of co-worker Charles Canton

By Aaron Humes: Tehje Vaughan, charged with manslaughter by negligence, and defense attorney Leeroy Banner were successful this afternoon in the High Court where they had, 48 hours earlier, been unsuccessful in the Magistrate’s Court in obtaining bail.

Justice Nigel Pilgrim set bail at $10,000 or two sureties of $5,000 subject to conditions.

Vaughan must report to the Police Station twice a week, Tuesdays and Fridays effective next week Tuesday, May 9. She also must not interfere with any of the prosecution witnesses and she must not be arrested and charged with any offenses whilst out on bail. A breach of any of her bail conditions will lead to her bail being revoked.

Vaughan was arraigned on Tuesday and denied bail over concerns she may hinder the police investigation because of her relationship with the key witness in the case – all three worked together. It was specifically cited by Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola despite Banner’s argument that manslaughter by negligence is not a charge for which bail is ordinarily denied in the first instance.

Vaughan is due back in court on July 3.
