By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Institute of Archaeology on Thursday announced the death of Commissioner of Archaeology George E. Thompson.
Thompson recently retired from the Institute of Archaeology where he was the Associate Manager for Parks. Thompson worked at the Institute for over 30 years, and as mentioned above, he was once the Commissioner of Archaeology when it was the Department of Archaeology. The Institute of Archaeology, since 2003, is now under the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH).
“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Institute of Archaeology and the National Institute of Culture and History inform you of the death of our dearest colleague and friend George E. Thompson,” the Institute of Archaeology NICH said in a social media post.
“Rest in perfect peace, Mr. George E. Thompson. You will be missed ineffably.
“We will miss him more than words can ever express.”
Born on August 24, 1967, Thompson was 55 years old. He passed away on Wednesday.
The Institute of Archaeology said details regarding the funeral and memorial service will be announced soon.
“We lost a really solid human being this evening, a precious soul, a colleague and a dear friend who taught me as much of his love for worlds long lost as he taught me about living life with passion and purpose,” Representative Tracy Taegar Panton said in a statement on social media.
“You were the consummate professional and we could always count on you through the thick and the thin. I can assure you that you made your mark and left a huge footprint on Archaeology in Belize as well as on our hearts. My sincerest condolences to your wife, your children, and your entire extended family.”
