International News: Experts at World Health Organization weigh whether world ready to end COVID emergency

Posted: Thursday, May 4, 2023. 1:31 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, global health experts are meeting to decide if COVID-19 is still an emergency under the World Health Organization’s (WHO) rules.

That label has since been applied every time since then.

As the world moves closer towards some form of normalcy, countries including the United States are lifting their domestic states of emergency.

WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted that he hopes to end the international emergency this year.

However, Dr. Ghebreyesus reminded that even if health experts decide COVID-19 is no longer an emergency, it remains a complex public health challenge.
