International News: UN Data showed 258 million people faced food insecurity in 2022

Posted: Thursday, May 4, 2023. 2:06 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Over 258 million people in 58 countries faced acute food insecurity in 2022, data from the United Nations show.

Food insecurity in these countries were as a result of conflicts, climate change, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The Global Report on Food Crises indicated that people faced starvation and death in 7 of those countries: Somalia, Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Haiti, Nigeria, South Sudan and Yemen.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said that this was an indication of the failure to implement U.N. goals to end world hunger.

The poorest countries were mostly impacted because of their dependency on food imports, the report cited.
