International News: World Health Organization fires scientist who led COVID-19 search over sexual misconduct

Posted: Thursday, May 4, 2023. 1:36 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The World Health Organization (WHO) has fired the scientist that led a delegation to China, 2 years ago to investigate the origins of COVID-19.

Peter Ben Embarek was fired due to alleged sexual misconduct, the Associated Press reports.

The World Health Organization says that it has ramped up efforts to root out sexual abuse and harassment after several cases were reported.

“Peter Ben Embarek was dismissed following findings of sexual misconduct against him and the corresponding disciplinary process,” spokesperson Marcia Poole said.

In 2021, Embarek led a team to China at the Huanan market and worked closely with Chinese scientists to try to identify how the virus first began sickening people.
