International News: United States to finalize new regulation to limit asylum access at border

Posted: Friday, May 5, 2023. 2:50 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United States is working to finalize new regulation that will limit asylum access to migrants caught illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, Reuters report.

On May 11, the public health restriction under Title 42 is expiring, however, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is introducing new measures to stem migration at the border.

With the new regulation, migrants will be ineligible for asylum if they passed through another country en route to the U.S. without seeking protection or if they failed to use other legal pathways to the United States.

U.S. law enforcement authorities are preparing for a surge in migrant crossings as the COVID-19 restrictions known as Title 42 ends next week.

The U.S. Government is encouraging migrants to use legal pathways to enter the U.S. or they will face sped-up deportation processes that will be part of the asylum rule.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported a rise in migrant arrests in recent weeks.
