International News: World Health Organization downgrades COVID-19; no longer emergency

Posted: Friday, May 5, 2023. 11:12 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that COVID-19 is no longer a global health emergency.

This significant announcement marks the symbolic end to the COVID-19 pandemic that prompted countrywide lockdowns, mask mandates, upended economies and killed millions of people, the Associated Press reports.

In 2020, the WHO declared COVID-19, an international crisis after the virus spread rapidly to countries around the world, infecting millions.

However, the WHO says that even though the emergency is over, the pandemic still hasn’t finished.

“It’s with great hope that I declare COVID-19 over as a global health emergency,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

“That does not mean COVID-19 is over as a global health threat,” he added.

The public is encouraged to get vaccinated to protect themselves and their loved ones against COVID-19.
