Opposition United Democratic Party wants Minister Oscar Requena arrested for fleeing scene of traffic accident

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is calling on authorities to arrest Minister of Rural Transformation, Labour, Local Government, and Community Development Oscar Requeña, for leaving the scene of a traffic accident before the arrival of police.

The UDP issued a statement saying that not arresting Requena for fleeing the scene of an accident sets a dangerous example in the public space.

“Failure to arrest and charge Requena sends the message to the public that it is no longer a crime to flee the scene of an accident,” the USDP said.

“Are leaving the scene of an accident and failure to provide a urine sample still crimes?.”

The party noted that, by his own admission, Requena left the accident scene at the request of those who stopped to help him and not the police. He further did not provide a sample to police to examine his blood alcohol content at the time of the accident. The UDP noted that the incident, which resulted in Requena crashing into a Belize Electricity Limited post, caused a blackout for numerous communities and thousands of dollars in damages that taxpayers will be responsible for.
