Planned City-wide “Blackout Sunday” postponed

Posted: Saturday, May 6, 2023. 6:18 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Belize City was to sustain on Sunday a planned power outage longer than some can remember, from seven a.m. to three p.m. – but Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has relented.

As we reported earlier this week, the company announced plans to upgrade its installations in the Greater Belize City area – from Magazine Road to Mile 8, George Price Highway – and install a temporary substation on the Lake Independence Boulevard. It also announced plans for a long-term shutdown of the Magazine Road plant for maintenance.

It was intended, the company said in a statement, to improve the reliability of the power supply and meet the growing energy demands of customers in Belize City.

However, on Friday, they announced that the blackout had been postponed until further notice.

To those who had made alternate plans or were preparing to suffer in expected high heat, BEL has apologized – but we suspect the scenario may play out again sometime down the road.
