Belmopan Red Taigaz pull off 100-96 win over Punta Gorda Panthers in Belize Elite Basketball League

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belmopan Red Taigaz pulled off a thrilling victory over the Punta Gorda Panthers in a close game in the Belize Elite Basketball League (BEBL) on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at the University of Belize Gym in Belmopan.

The Red Taigaz were led by Jeremiah Toney, who had a triple-double with 31 points, 11 rebounds, 12 assists, 3 steals and 1 block. He was supported by Jamaal Harris with 14 points and 5 rebounds, Brandon Flowers with 12 points and 14 rebounds, Brandon Rogers with 11 points and 4 rebounds, and Jayden Lopez with 10 points and 4 rebounds.

The Panthers put up a strong fight, especially Chance Leslie, who scored a game-high 40 points along with 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. Leslie was assisted by Elvert Ariola with 22 points and 3 rebounds, Raluni Bernardez with 13 points and 4 rebounds, and Delmore Sentino with 11 points and a whopping 20 rebounds.

The game was tight throughout, with both teams exchanging leads and momentum. The first quarter ended with the Red Taigaz ahead by 7 points (27-20), but the Panthers bounced back in the second quarter to outscore them by 6 points (36-30) but trailed by one point (56-57). The third quarter was a low-scoring affair with both teams netting 21 points and the Red Taigaz still ahead by one point. The fourth quarter was a nail-biter, with both teams trading baskets and fouls. The Red Taigaz managed to hold on to their lead and win by four points, 100-96.

The Red Taigaz dominated the boards (57-42), especially on the offensive end (23-11), and had an advantage in assists (23-20), steals (10-7) and blocks (5-2).

The Belmopan-side improved their record to 4-8 still lodged in the seventh position in the eight-team league with 16 points. They still have two games left to play in the regular season. The Panthers dropped to 1-12 and remain at the bottom of the standings with 14 points and one game left to play.

The next game for the Red Taigaz will be against the Belize Hurricanes on Friday, May 12, at the UB Gym. The Panthers will play their final game against the Orange Walk Running Rebels on Saturday, May 6, at Toledo Sporting Complex.
