By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Fund for a Sustainable Future (BFSF) has presented the BFSF First Annual Impact Report, a document that showcases the incredible achievements of the BFSF in advancing science, conservation, and climate resilience for Belize’s marine ecosystems, said the Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation (MBECA).

“The BSSF is that important door through which investments for marine conservation from the Blue Loan Agreement will flow to those government and non-governmental entities engaged daily in the conservation or our marine resources as well as those involved in building our Blue Economy,” said MBECA CEO and Chair of the BFSF Board Kennedy Carrillo.

The BFSF is a non-profit organization, operational since November 2022, that aims to foster and fund innovative and collaborative projects focused on our marine resources that address the most pressing environmental challenges facing Belize.

The report chronicles the ways in which the BFSF has supported research, education, community engagement, and policy advocacy to protect and restore Belize’s natural heritage.

“Together, we can help create a more sustainable future for Belize!” MBECA said, inviting us to read the BFSF First Annual Impact Report to learn more about their vision, mission, values, and goals.

Leandra Cho-Ricketts, BFSF Executive Director, said that under the Government Strategic Allocation (GSA), the BFSF Board approved $11.6 million for six government agencies over three years. The funding is for components including fisheries management, protection of marine resources, development of marine spatial plan, and ICZM, monitoring and management of mangroves, and adaptive management and socialization of Belize’s Blue Bond.

She added that in January the BFSF also approved six grants for a total of $3.1 million. Additionally, Cho-Ricketts said that the BFSF also provided emergency funding of over $550,000 to five non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for eight of Belize marine protected areas.
