International News: United States sanctions son of “El Chapo” over trafficking of fentanyl

Posted: Tuesday, May 9, 2023. 11:29 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the United States sanctioned a son of notorious drug kingpin, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman along with 3 more members of the powerful Sinaloa cartel and 2 Mexican based firms over trafficking of fentanyl.

According to The Associated Press, the sanctions were announced today just as Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and U.S. President Joe Biden will discuss immigration and the fentanyl crisis.

The U.S. Treasury department noted that the sanctions include a freeze on American-owned assets and bank accounts.

U.S. authorities note that fentanyl is the deadliest drug in the U.S. and data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 71,000 people died from overdosing on synthetic opioids such as fentanyl in 2021.

The Mexican President has since denied that cartels in his country are producing the drug but acknowledged that chemicals and finished fentanyl are smuggled into Mexico from China.
