Belize City man demands justice after allegedly being beaten and robbed by police officers while detained

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man is seeking justice after he was allegedly beaten up and robbed of his money by police officers who detained him over a public drinking offense.

Fifty-one-year-old Paul Diaz said that he was drinking a beer outside of a shop called Chi Ming Store when a police officer shouted after him to get rid of it.

He said he drank the rest of the beer and is certain the officer did not see him do it, but the officer still came to him behaving aggressively because of the empty pint bottle in his hand.

Diaz said he was taken to a police station where the officer searched his pockets, took what cash he had on him (about $48 and some change), and punched him several times in the stomach before throwing him into a cell. Diaz said that they took all his personal items from him during detention and he did not manage to get everything back upon his release.

He was kept at the station overnight and charged the following day for public drinking. He appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where he pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined $25 plus $5 cost of court.

Diaz says he hopes the Commissioner of Police will hear of his plight and render assistance.
