Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) says customers will be spared higher power bills for now

Posted: Wednesday, May 10, 2023. 5:00 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) said it agreed with a decision by the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to defer increases in electricity tariffs, fees, and charges “in consideration of the challenging economic constraints our customers continue to face.”

The PUC, in its initial decision issued last Friday on the 2023 Annual Review Proceeding (ARP), agreed to maintain the current mean electricity rate at just shy of 40 cents per kilowatt-hour until the end of the current Full Tariff Period in June of 2024, after the power company submitted as part of the ARP to keep the rates the same for the present.

BEL says it has seen “appreciable increases in business costs,” however, the PUC has made adjustments to projections in cost of power and capital investment projects which the company is currently reviewing and intends to respond to by May 15.

If by the end of the month, there is no objection, the decision goes into effect as the final decision on June 1.

BEL has promised to “roll out a campaign to inform the public of its strategic plans and future investments that will help to maintain stable electricity rates into the foreseeable future while delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable energy solutions to enhance the quality of life and the productivity of enterprise for all Belizeans and to support national development” in the coming weeks.
