Belize High School Principal Jamie Usher honored as “Inspirational Educator” by FIRST robotics community

By Benjamin Flowers: Belize High School’s principal Jamie Usher is one of 15 educators from around the world who were honored this week by the FIRST robotics community, through its Inspire the Future: FIRST Educators Recognition Program.

FIRST, through nominations global FIRST community, chose educators from Canada, the USA, Turkey, India, Mexico, Australia, and Belize.

“Jamie Usher is a high school teacher in Belize who believes that engaging STEM activities are the key to enhancing the educational experience and filling the STEM workforce. Her school’s motto is “learners today, leaders tomorrow,” and she works diligently to ensure that her students have fun while building the necessary skills to be the changemakers our world needs,” the organization said of Usher in her honoree profile.

Educators honored by the program this year will serve as a FIRST Educator Ambassador; participate in thought leadership shared prominently on FIRST digital properties; have opportunities for media interviews and attend key FIRST events; collaborate on critical priorities with the FIRST Education team.

Breaking Belize News spoke with Usher, following the nomination, who modestly said, “Honestly I feel grateful and yes, this does fire me up to work even harder.”

Usher recently returned from the FIRST® Robotics Competition held in Houston, Texas along with the BHS robotics team, having made history by bringing home the Rookie Inspiration Award and five gold medals.
