International News: United Nations report reveals over 600 killed in gang violence in Haiti

Posted: Wednesday, May 10, 2023. 8:50 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk said that the reports of violence in Haiti underlines the scale of suffering and raises the message that Haiti needs urgent support.

Over 600 people have been killed in gang violence in Haiti in the last month alone.

According to the Associated French Press, the U.N. chief further called for the international community to send a specialised armed force to help Haiti’s police and authorities restore order.

Haiti has been gripped with a surge in gang violence coupled with a humanitarian crisis.

The U.N.’s report noted that violence in Haiti is becoming more extreme and frequent.

“In the month of April alone, more than 600 people were killed in a new wave of extreme violence that hit several districts across the capital,” Turk’s office informed.

“This follows the killing of at least 846 people in the first three months of 2023, in addition to 393 injured and 395 kidnapped during that period –- a 28-percent increase in violence in the previous quarter,” it added.

Turk urged the international community to intervene and support Haiti.
