By Benjamin Flowers: The Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) says that the meetings of the People’s Constitutional Commission (PCC) are so important to the country that its meetings should be broadcast live.
The PCC, which is tasked with recommending amendments to Belize’s constitution, held an information session with the UDP this week to brief the Party Leader and Party Chairman on its work thus far. In a statement issued earlier today, the UDP said that a number of topics were discussed including the judiciary, equal opportunity, criminal justice, the importance of the Opposition in our democracy, freedom of press, the role of the diaspora, equal opportunity for all, the power of the people to decide in a referendum to remove the monarchy as our head of state.
“The Opposition believes that it is in the public interest for all Constitution Commission meetings to be broadcast live on all tv stations and streamed on all social media platforms so the citizens of Belize at home and abroad can have access at every step of this most sacred exercise,” the UDP said.
The UDP stressed that the nation’s Constitution is sacrosanct, and thus, any exercise to reform it must be done with a view to strengthen the protection of rights already enshrined therein and expand those rights for Belizeans.
The PCC was launched on November 14, 2022, and held its inaugural meeting at the House of Culture in Belize City, on November 24, 2022.
