After end of lottery regime, Brads Gaming Group wants to get paid

By Aaron Humes: It has now been more than a week since the end of the Boledo, Jackpot and lottery regime of Brads Gaming Group Limited and both sides are gearing up for a showdown in court.

The Government announced on April 26 that the Lotteries Committee had revoked Brads’ license, which had seven years to run, for various breaches of policy and law which had not been followed.

But Senior Counsel Dean Barrow told KREM News that there is more to it than that, and that after speaking to Kim Chee, the managing director of Brads, their next steps are headed to the courts: “Brads does not agree that the Government had proper justification for the revocation of the license and will go to court to seek a declaration that what has been done is unlawful. I need to make clear – that does not mean that Brads will be asking for any restoration of the license; he can’t do that.”

As Barrow pointed out, what Government does with its own lottery service is its own affair, but while it is entitled to do what it did, if it cannot justify why it did it and even if it can, his client must be compensated.

The Government says it will make alternative arrangements for the administration of the Government Lotteries. Prime Minister John Briceño reiterated that the new iteration is for the benefit of all Belizeans: “That’s the only reason why I would revoke the license. We cannot revoke a license if the people are living up to the conditions. And we have been meeting with them since last year I think from August and talking to them and pointing out where the deficiencies have been. I wish I could tell you what I feel, but no, I think, that’s as far as I can go, but I can assure you that we want to be able to, whenever we’re able, the government is able to launch the Boledo and the lottery, we want to ensure that the majority of the money stays with the government. We want to use it for health. We have to find a way how we could pay for the national health insurance. We have sports that we want to be able to make more monies available. And even health. So, it is monies that our country can definitely put to good use.”
