By Aaron Humes: The Government of Belize has scrambled into action to come up with a suitable compensation figure for the family of 20-year-old Derrick Uh, killed by heat stroke in the back of a police van nine months ago in Corozal Town after being detained on an alleged report of indecent sexual assault.
Channel 7 News reported Wednesday night that Senior Counsel Dean Barrow has filed suit in the courts after failing to get the ear of the Attorney General’s Ministry for several months.
Family members reiterated today that no figure will ever bring Derrick back or represent how much he meant to them.
Prime Minister John Briceno and Commissioner of Police Chester Williams reiterated their condolences and their intention to amicably settle the matter in separate statements issued on Wednesday night and in Orange Walk this morning, and we understand the family is considering the offer from Government before deciding whether to proceed with the lawsuit.
Four officers ranging from Corporal to Inspector were charged with Uh’s manslaughter and their case is winding its way through the court system.
