Ministry of Health and Wellness warns that smoke inhalation can be toxic

Posted: Friday, May 12, 2023. 11:15 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Ministry of Health and Wellness warns the public that smoke inhalation can be toxic.

Belize is in the dry season and many communities are affected by smoke from forest fires.

“This smoke can be toxic to persons, especially those with lung and other respiratory conditions.  It is, therefore, advisable that emergency help be requested, and the following actions taken if a person suffers from smoke inhalation,” the Ministry advises.

The Ministry urges the public to ensure that the person is in an area with fresh air, assist them to sit or lay the person down on their side, not their back.

You are advised to quickly get the affected person to the nearest health facility for medical attention.

You can also assist by notifying the police or Fire Department in your area if you are aware of persons responsible for starting fires.

This will help to reduce the risk of smoke inhalation to community members and prevent fire-associated risks.
