International News; China sentences U.S. citizen to life in prison for espionage

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, a Chinese court convicted U.S. citizen, John Shing-wan Leung,78, on charges of espionage.

According to Reuters, John was sentenced to life in prison.

“Suzhou’s National Security Bureau began investigating Leung on April 15, 2021, on suspicion of spying,” the court indicated.

The U.S. Embassy noted that it is aware of the case.

“The Department of State has no greater priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas,” a spokesperson said.

There is growing tensions between China and the U.S. including accusations of Chinese spying and human rights abuses, to U.S. efforts to build up military alliances to curb China’s ambitions toward Taiwan.
