By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The mother of a Honduran migrant teen that died in a shelter for unaccompanied minor in Florida last week has indicated that the teen suffered from epilepsy.
According to the Associated Press, the 17-year-old teen was at a holding center in Safety Harbor and was found unconscious. He was later transported to a hospital and pronounced dead shortly after.
His mom, Norma Saraí Espinoza Maradiaga, said that her son’s seizures were brief and not serious.
“He had epilepsy, but it wasn’t an illness that threatened him, because he had had it since he was eight. The longest a seizure would last was less than a minute. It seemed like it only hit him a little,” she said.
Norma says that her son left his home on April 25, 2023 and crossed the U.S.-Mexico border days later.
On May 5, 2023, he was in the custody of U.S. authorities and they placed him in the facility for unaccompanied minors.
Norma says that she is hoping to get more information on her son’s cause of death.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services offered condolences and said a review of health care records was underway.
