By Rubén Morales Iglesias: With the San Pedro Pirates-Verdes match out of the way, the Premier League of Belize’s semifinals should be kicking off on Wednesday. Though inside sources said the semifinals will be played this week between Wednesday and Sunday, and the Finals next week between Wednesday and Sunday, the PLB League has not said anything publicly yet, except that the PLB Organizing Committee is meeting with the four semifinalist clubs on Monday evening.

Progresso, however, are already promoting their semifinal match against Verdes on social media.

Verdes finished the regular season first with 30 points followed by San Pedro in second with 26 points, Port Layola third with 25 and Progresso fourth with 23.

So, number one seeded Verdes will play fourth place Progresso while second-seeded San Pedro Pirates will match up against third-place Port Layola.

Since the lower ranked team play the first game at home, Progresso will be hosting Verdes at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm while Port Layola should be hosting the San Pedro Pirates at the Marion Jones the same evening. Neither the PLB nor Port have said anything on the game’s time and venue yet. Progresso are promoting their game against Verdes as the ‘North vs West, ‘Belizean Power (since they don’ have foreign players) vs The Green Machine’.

Considering that the PLB is bringing up the matches in an attempt to finish the Closing Championship by May 28, the Concacaf deadline to submit the name of the champions who will represent Belize in the Concacaf League, the line of thinking must be that the PLB would rather wait until they meet with the clubs to make any official statement. There’s been public grumbling on social media by team representatives, so that measure makes quite a bit of sense. After all, the League has been getting quite a bit of flack for the way they managed the San Pedro Pirates-Verdes game which should have played on Saturday, April 8, but wasn’t played until Sunday, May 13.
