Accused radiologist charged with sexual assault to be interdicted by Ministry of Health

By Aaron Humes: Now that charges have been levied against radiologist Dr Desmond Arzu, the Ministry of Health and Wellness has written to the Ministry of the Public Service to request that the doctor be placed on interdiction.

Dr Arzu has been charged with criminal sexual assault for his mishandling of a female patient, 23, reported in March.

The Ministry calls the allegations “very serious and disturbing” in a statement and condemned for the record sexual misconduct and assault of patients in the care of the public health service; it confirmed that Dr Arzu is employed by the Ministry pending interdiction, but that the incident allegedly took place in a private health facility.

The victim’s complaint was made on March 30 and she subsequently reported the matter to Police; the Ministry decided that it would be dealt with to start with as a criminal investigation and so it took something of a back seat to Police and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The Ministry reiterated that its priority is the wellbeing of this victim specifically and those who access its services generally.
