By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Philip Burns won the 60 km (37.5 miles) Masters Road Race in the 3rd San Benito Cycling Classic 2023 in San Benito, Peten, Guatemala on Sunday. The race was cut short after about 40 km (25 miles) because of heavy weather and prizes were given as per the riders’ positions at the moment the race was stopped.
The Belizean cyclists were quite dominant taking the top three spots and four of the top five.
Burns, riding for M&M Engineering, won the race in 58 minutes and seven seconds (58:07). His teammates Roque Matus (58:08) and Mike Wagner (58:09) were second and third. Another M&M Engineering rider, Ryan Willoughby, was fifth. Geoffrey Waight was seventh.
Burns didn’t race on Saturday so he didn’t have a shot at the overall ranking in which Matus finished second.
Joslyn Chavarria of Team FAL (Furnished Apartments Limited) took the top honours in 55 minutes and two seconds (00:55:02) in the Elite race, according to organizers Cycling Petén. Chavarria was followed by Kaydine Pinelo of Cano’s Road Rage who was clocked one second behind Chavarria in 55:03. Four other Belizean riders finished in the Top Six, namely Mairon Muñoz of 501 Valvoline Cycling Team, G-Flow’s Kevin Gentle, Team FAL’s Shervin Budna, and unattached rider Shayle Parades.
On top of that, Tyler Tejeda of Rolling Shattaz-BZ Boyz but riding under Team Cayo was the overall winner in the Junior Category capturing first place in the 40-km Mountain Bike Race on Saturday and placing second in the Road Race on Sunday.
