Trial of San Pedro businessman accused of murdering his wife begins

By Breaking Belize News Staff: This week, the trial of David Gonzalez, the San Pedro businessman accused of murdering his wife, began in the High Court of Belize.

Gonzalez appeared in court on Monday before Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft, represented by a legal team consisting of attorneys Leroy Banner, Oscar Selgado and Richard “Dickie” Bradley.

Prosecutor Riis Cattouse called 21 of his 38 witnesses at the start of the trial and 3 took the stand, while the others’ statements were only read into evidence as they were agreed upon by the defense.

The major witness of day one was Scenes of Crime Technician, Zair Villatoro, who presented a report and accompanying pictures that the victim, 28-year-old Marisela Gonzalez had bruises all over her body, visible scars and a huge bruise and marks on the right side of her neck.

The body of Marisela Gonzalez was found on the morning of Monday, October 12, 2020 at the garbage dump site in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. She was semi-nude and also had a single gunshot wound. David Gonzalez was the prime suspect at the time of the discovery of the body and he was charged two days later with her murder.

The trial continues at 1:00 p.m. today.
