By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that those trying to lose weight should avoid using zero calorie non-sugar sweeteners.
Good Morning America reports that these zero calorie sweeteners have not been proven to help with weight loss long-term in children or adults.
In addition, their side effects include increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, Type 2 diabetes and death in adults.
“Replacing free sugars with NSS does not help with weight control in the long term. People need to consider other ways to reduce free sugars intake, such as consuming food with naturally occurring sugars, like fruit, or unsweetened food and beverages,” Francesco Branca, WHO director for nutrition and food safety said.
The recommendation from the World Health Organization was issued after a “systematic review” of over 280 studies involving the use of artificial sweeteners in adults, pregnant women and children.
Globally, people are grappling with obesity therefore non-sugar sweeteners are becoming increasingly common ingredients found in soft drinks, “diet” foods and other processed products.
Experts say that the healthiest alternative is to use no sweetener at all.
