By Benjamin Flowers: The Government of Belize and Spain are in talks about strengthening diplomatic relations, according to Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Immigration, Eamon Courtenay.
Courtenay, who is attending a Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Foreign Ministers Meeting in Jamaica, tweeted earlier that he met with Spain’s Secretary of State for Ibero-America and the Caribbean and Spanish in the World at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, EU and Cooperation Juan Fernández Trigo.
“We discussed strengthening the excellent relations between Belize and Spain,” Courtenay said.
Belize and Spain established diplomatic relations on 13 January 1989 and have shared a cordial relationship since. Belize has an embassy and honorary consulates in Madrid, Barcelona, and Palma de Mallorca, while Spain has a non-resident embassy for Belize in Guatemala and an honorary consulate located in Belize City.
Notably, Belize and Spain began talks to strengthen diplomatic ties back in 2003 under the Said Musa Administration.
