Premier League of Belize and its clubs ranked lowest in Concacaf

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize (PLB) and its clubs are ranked the lowest in Concacaf, according to the new Concacaf ranking system for clubs and leagues.

The Premier League of Belize is 14^th out of 14 leagues in the region: three from North America, seven from Central America, and four from the Caribbean. Mexico’s Liga MX is number one followed by the United States’ Major League Soccer (MLS). Honduras’ Liga Nacional de Fútbol de Honduras is the top Central American League. The Jamaica Premier League (tenth overall) is the top Caribbean League.

In the clubs’ ranking, led by Monterrey of Mexico, the Belizean clubs are at the bottom occupying spots 177 to 184 with Verdes at 177.

“The new rankings will be an important part of the Confederation’s revamped club ecosystem and will be key a factor in determining draw seedings for official Concacaf club competitions beginning with the new 2023 Central American and Caribbean Cups and onwards, and next year’s eagerly anticipated expanded Concacaf Champions League,” Concacaf said in a press release.

Concacaf said the rankings will be updated regularly after international club competitions, domestic league, and cup matches.

The ranking system will be used to determine draw seedings for Concacaf club competitions.

Concacaf said the new ranking system for men’s clubs used results since 2017 from official international and domestic club competitions such as the Concacaf Champions League, Concacaf Regional Cups (Leagues Cup, Central American Cup, and Caribbean Cup), Domestic first division professional league, Member Association Cups (which qualify for Concacaf competitions), and the FIFA Club World Cup.
