Support lupus patients and their families this weekend by participating in the annual Lupus Walk

By Benjamin Flowers: The Lupus and RA Association are preparing to hold its annual Lupus Walk this weekend, and all Belizeans are invited to come out and show their support to lupus patients and their families.

The walk takes place on Saturday, May 20 in Belize City, starting at the Belize Civic Center, heading down Central American Boulevard, turning onto Cemetery Road, over the Pound Yard Bridge, up Orange Street, onto Albert Street, up King Street onto Regent Street, over the Swing Bridge, down North Front Street and ending at the Fort George Memorial Park.

Arlette Gomez, President of the Lupus and RA Association of Belize, told our newsroom that the walk was set for 5:00 p.m. to avoid lupus patients walking in intense sunlight, which agitates their condition. Gomes explained that the Association has been around since 2015, and was formed by a small group of lupus patients who decided to band together to support each other and the growing population of Lupus patients in Belize.

“We try to provide support as much as we can: moral support, emotional support, but we also assist with medical assistance and medication because the disease is so expensive. We try to do it every quarter, we hold a medication drive, but we can only do it based on the level of donations that we get,” Gomes explained.

Lupus is a disease that occurs when the body begins to attack itself through its natural defenses. Symptoms of lupus include rash, fatigue, mouth sores, vomiting, headache, joint pain, kidney problems, hair loss, swelling of the lymph nodes and sensitivity to sunlight.
