What happened to Imari Galvez?

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The body of 19-year-old Imari Galvez was discovered on Tuesday evening on the Hummingbird Highway.

She was last seen at her home on Saturday morning and her family had been searching for her.

This tragedy has prompted public outcry on social media as family and friends grieve and demand answers and justice for a beloved daughter, sister and friend.

During an interview with Plus TV on Tuesday afternoon, her dad said that Imari was known to go out so he wasn’t concerned on Sunday morning when she wasn’t in her room.

However, on Monday, Imari’s boyfriend visited the family’s home in Belmopan and asked about her since he hadn’t heard from her either.

That is when her mom and family began to call friends and relatives.

Imari’s dad said that they have no idea with who she went and pled to the authorities to investigate and search surveillance cameras in the area to obtain footage of the vehicle or who she went with.

Imari’s brutal murder has shocked our nation.

The question we should ask is how can we bring justice for Imari?

How will our comments on victim blaming help with this investigation?

And, as girls and women, we cannot and must not accept to live in fear.

As a community and a country we must do more to protect our youths.
