Belize sends National Team to compete in NORCECA U-21 Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship and Pan American Cup

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Volleyball Association (BVA) is sending the Belize National Women’s Volleyball Team to compete in the NORCECA U-21 Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship and Pan American Cup, which runs from May 23 to 28, 2023, in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico.

“Belize earned their spot in this prestigious tournament through their impressive performance at the AFECAVOL U-21 Central American Volleyball Championship held in Belize in July 2022,” the BVA said in a press release.

“With a remarkable second-place finish in that tournament last year, Belize secured their qualification as the sub-champion.”

Eight countries are competing at the regional championship, The eight have been divided into two groups of four. Pool A comprises Belize, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. Pool B consists of the United States, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Guatemala.

Belize will play Mexico on Tuesday, May 23 at 2:00 pm (3:00 pm Bze Time). Our team will then face Cuba on Wednesday, May 24 at 4:00 pm (5:00 pm Bze Time). The final match will be against Puerto Rico at 2:00 pm (3:00 pm Belize Time) on Thursday, May 25.

“Being the smallest country in the championship, Belize’s presence is truly remarkable and a gold medal achievement in itself,” President of the Belize Volleyball Association, Allan Sharp said.

“Our ladies are prepared to face the challenge and are eager to compete at this higher level. They are determined to demonstrate Belize’s prowess in volleyball and can’t wait to showcase their skills on the court.”

The Belize National Women’s Team is made up of the following players: Samantha Jones, Gareth Bruce, Zanyah Hall, Kaleigh Cardinez, Avianka Avila, Khaya Gordon, Jevia Leslie, Fatoumata Camara (Fatima Ramirez), Blessed Omamurhe, Nisaan Martinez, Ziane Henderson, and Zalika Henderson. Cuban coach Jose Fontes heads the coaching staff that includes Lupita Quan, Nelissa Ramirez, and Larry Bennett.

Belize will also be represented at the tournament by International Referee Khalid Encalada.

The BVA said matches will be streamed live on Belize Volleyball Facebook page.
