By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Government of Belize and the Ministry of Health and Wellness continue to support Taiwan’s participation as an observer at the World Health Assembly (WHA).
Today, the Ministry announced that Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard will attend the 76th World Health Assembly and voice the government’s support during the general debate.
This year, the WHA declared that the COVID-19 pandemic is finally over.
“However, the global community must remain vigilant and unite in preparation for the next threat. Taiwan has proven to be a reliable ally in the fight against communicable diseases and has become a brilliant example in handling the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Ministry noted.
“Belize and many other countries have benefited from Taiwan’s assistance, during and after the pandemic, to better equip their healthcare systems by providing invaluable training and donations of medical supplies,” the Ministry added.
The Government of Belize says that it remains committed to the joint efforts led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and reiterates its support for the inclusion of Taiwan as an observer at the 76th WHA to help the fight against COVID-19 and other emerging communicable diseases and share critical genetic sequencing information.
“Belize, therefore, urges the WHO to include Taiwan in all health emergency-related meetings and mechanisms, such as the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence and the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS),” the Ministry reiterated.
