By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In 2021, a woman killed a man defending herself after he attacked and raped her.
On Tuesday, a court in Mexico sentenced the women to 6 years in prison.
According to the Associated Press, the ruling against Roxana Ruiz has sparked anger from feminist groups.
Ruiz’ attorney says that the court sets a bad precedent.
“It would be a bad precedent if this sentence were to hold. It’s sending the message to women that, you know what, the law says you can defend yourself, but only to a point. He raped you, but you don’t have the right to do anything,” Attorney Angel Carrera said.
In addition, Ruiz was ordered to pay more than $16,000 in reparations to the family of the man who raped her.
Women’s rights groups have repeatedly accused Mexican authorities of revictimizing survivors and failing to judge cases with a gender perspective.
