Police interrupt PLB semifinals match between Progresso and Verdes to detain Woodrow West

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize semifinal match between Progresso and Verdes at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk was interrupted around minute 38 of the first half as several police officers walked in to detain goalkeeper Woodrow West.

West was reportedly wanted for questioning in regard to the murder of Imari Galvez with whom he was allegedly in a relationship.

“West started the game and police came for him at about the 38′ minute or so,” a Verdes source told Breaking Belize News. “Then we had to substitute in our backup goalkeeper, Argentine, Leonardo Paz.”

Earlier the Police Commissioner had said to the media the police were looking for a popular football player and that he believed the player was hiding.

“If West was hiding, what was he doing on the field,” the Verdes source questioned saying that if West were hiding, he wouldn’t have reported to play.

The Verdes source said West had been at his regular day job and had been in training with training Verdes on Monday and Tuesday in preparation for Wednesday’s semifinal match and had given a statement to the police on Monday.

The question remains. Why would police interrupt an official Premier League of Belize football match when they could have detained West either before or after the match?

The Verdes source said the officer in charge said he would have waited for the end of the game, but he allegedly got a call and proceeded with the interruption of the match.

In a similar situation some time ago at Marion Jones, the arresting officers were convinced by the people concerned with the game to wait until the game was over to detain a player.

Internationally, on Sunday, September 5, 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Brazilian authorities interrupted a Brazil-Argentina World Cup qualifying match seven minute after it had started to arrest four Argentine players to deport them. The players, including goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who had travelled from England had reportedly not quarantined before entering Brazil.
