By Breaking Belize News Staff: In a four-day span, authorities caught almost 40 Brazilian nationals committing immigration offenses.

On Friday, May 12, the first group of Brazilians, a total of 15 people comprising of 10 adults and five minors, were arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court charged with illegal entry for entering into the country via the banks of the Mopan River in Benque Viejo, Cayo district, instead of a legal port of entry. They all pleaded guilty.

By Monday, May 15, a group of 22 Brazilian nationals, comprised of 18 adults and four minors, were arraigned in the same court, 8 were charged with illegal entry and 10 were charged with being prohibited immigrants.

In court, Brazilians from the second group, through the aid of a translator, told the court that they paid money and were promised to be transported to the United States.

Belize had similar issues in October 2022 with Cuban nationals, where groups were being found trying to go to the United States. During the Cuban influx, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade & Immigration Eamon Courtenay, said he would reach out to his counterpart in the Cuban government to determine a solution to the problem. There has been no official word from the Ministry regarding the Brazilian influx; however, we note that Courtenay is currently in Jamaica attending a CARICOM meeting.
