By Breaking Belize News Staff: Twenty-five-year-old Antoine Rivero, who was charged with the 2018 murder of 37-year-old Belize City resident Marcia Downs, is now a free man.
Rivero was acquitted of his murder charge in the High Court of Belize on Thursday by Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft.
During the trial, one of the key witnesses, a minor aged 17, was called upon to give virtual testimony; however, when called to testify, the minor told the court that he did not want to give evidence. Justice Sandcroft asked a series of questions including whether the minor was being threatened, bribed, or otherwise coerced into refusing to give testimony, but he said no to all of those questions.
With that, the prosecution closed its case, unable to provide further evidence against Rivero. His attorney, Oscar Selgado, then made a no-case submission, and Rivero was acquitted.
Marcia Downs was fatally shot on April 11, 2018, while at her front gate.
