Minister Oscar Requeña faces no charges in motor vehicle crash

By Aaron Humes: Minister of Labour and Rural Development Oscar Requeña has avoided charges in relation to his recent traffic accident almost as nimbly as he avoided the motorcyclist that crossed his path that night.

Asked by Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow whether charges would be laid, Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa said there would be none based on the police investigation and specifically refuted claims that the Minister left the scene before police arrived to investigate and that the accident was not reported.

“The Minister stayed at the scene, contrary to UDP propaganda; he stayed at the scene, I think, for some 45 minutes awaiting the arrival of the police. His airbag had deployed, hitting him in the face…[he was] disoriented,” said Musa, adding that Requeña took the advice of constituents who came out to the scene that he should seek medical attention, after which he reported the matter the next day.

Musa also made clear he had no personal involvement: “You can count on the fact that there was no ministerial involvement or meddling on my part; I didn’t call anybody from the Punta Gorda Police Station or the Commissioner, I allowed the investigation to take its course.”

In all, the police investigation found no offense committed by the Minister, and the police’s report would be shared as agreed with the Opposition.
