Belize U-21 Women’s National Volleyball Team leaves Sunday to Mexico to compete in NORCECA U-21 Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship and Pan American Cup

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize National Women’s Volleyball Team will leave early on Sunday to Nogales, Sonora, Mexico to compete in the NORCECA U-21 Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship and Pan American Cup.

The Belize National Team will be travelling all day and is expected to arrive in Nogales, which is near the United States border, by midnight, according to Belize Volleyball Association (BVA) president Allan Sharp. The team leaves Belize City around 3:00 am to Chetumal where they will take a flight that will take them to Hermosillo, Sonora, from where they take a three-hour bus ride to Nogales.

Belize is participating in the NORCECA U-21 Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship and Pan American Cup which runs from May 23 to 28, 2023.

Belize qualified to the regional tournament after finishing second in the AFECAVOL U-21 Central American Volleyball Championship held in Belize in July 2022.

Eight countries are competing in the NORCECA championship. Belize is in Pool A along with hosts Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. Pool B comprises the United States, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Guatemala.

Belize opens against Mexico on Tuesday, May 23 at 8:00 pm (9:00 pm Bze Time). Belize’s second game will pit our young ladies against Cuba on Wednesday, May 24 at 4:00 pm (5:00 pm Bze Time). The final match will be against Puerto Rico at 2:00 pm (3:00 pm Belize Time) on Thursday, May 25.

“Being the smallest country in the championship, Belize’s presence is truly remarkable and a gold medal achievement in itself,” Sharp said in a BVA press release.

 “Our ladies are prepared to face the challenge and are eager to compete at this higher level. They are determined to demonstrate Belize’s prowess in volleyball and can’t wait to showcase their skills on the court.”

Belize will also be represented at the tournament by International Referee Khalid Encalada.

The BVA said matches will be streamed live on Belize Volleyball Facebook page.
