International News: Mexico’s airport resumes operations following closure due to volcanic ash

Posted: Saturday, May 20, 2023. 2:55 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Early this morning, Mexico’s Benito Juarez International Airport halted operations after suspending flights due to ash spewing from nearby Popocatepetl volcano.

Reuters reports that the airport resumed operations at around 10 am today after intensive checks of the runways and verifying wind conditions.

During the 5 hours shut down, several flights were delayed or cancelled.

The Popocatepetl volcano has been active since 1994 and is closely monitored by scientists, cameras and sensors because of danger to the millions of people living in close communities.
