Mexico asserts national security authority over Tren Maya Project

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador declared on Thursday that the Tren Maya’s construction and operation could reach an estimated cost of $20 billion.

Reuters reported that President Lopez Obrador has classified the Tren Maya as an issue of national security in Mexico.

A statement in Mexico’s official gazette by Lopez Obrador stated that the government and national security authorities will oversee “the construction, operation, upkeep…execution and management of the transport infrastructure” that encompasses the Maya tourist train project and the transoceanic freight rail corridor.

The constitutional stipulations include that the state will exercise increased control over the national development and planning of this project.

The Tren Maya, extending over a 930-mile route, is expected to reach the vicinity of the country’s borders with Guatemala and Belize.
